Did you get your teeth straightened when you were little? So did I! Did you wear the retainer afterwards? Neither did I. 12 years later my teeth are now crooked and I’ve been self-conscious with my smile. While researching, I came across SmileDirectClub as an affordable and easy option.

1. TAKE SMILE DIRECT CLUB’S SMILE ASSESSMENT
Start by taking Smile Direct Club’s 30-second assessment test to see if you qualify.
2. VISIT A SMILESHOP OR REQUEST AN IMPRESSION KIT
If you qualify for Smile Direct Club, then make an appointment to visit a SmileShop near you or request an impression kit in the mail. There is a SmileShop in Austin at 9333 Research Blvd, Austin, TX 78759 so I went into the SmileShop. I was so surprised by how fast the process was and impressed by the technology! The Smile Guide started with giving me a disposable smile stretcher to stretch my cheeks to take pictures of teeth. Then during the scan session, the Smile Guide passed a wand over each tooth to record the contour of my tooth, gums, and bite. It was crazy to see the teeth in my mouth mapped out on the screen immediately. The scans are then sent to a dental professional to create molds. If you opt for an impression kit, you’ll use the mouth trays and putty to imprint your teeth and mail it back to Smile Direct Club. The impressions are reviewed by a dental professional who works to move each tooth like a puzzle.
3. PREVIEW YOUR NEW SMILE
Smile Direct Club will email you a preview of your new smile by showing you how your smile will transform and begin production of your invisible aligners. My biggest problem is my bottom row and my top row sticking out so it’s exciting to see the projected transformation!
4. CHECK THE MAIL!
My aligners arrived in the mail after a couple of weeks. The type A in me loves the organized and easy to read packaging that tells me exactly what month and week each aligner is. The first shipment contains 2 month’s worth of aligners (that’s 6 sets). The instructions say to wear the first set for 1 week, the second set for 1 week, and the third set for 2 weeks. Don’t throw away any aligners in case they break or you lose an aligner. In the box, there were also chewies (spongy things to help make your aligners are fully set), outie tool (hook tool to help take out your aligners), emery board (to fine-tune the fit), and case (to store your aligners). You also receive a complimentary 5 pack of premium teeth whitening ($50 value).
5. TRY THEM ON
I was surprised by how well the first aligners fit – tight but snug. No need for the chewies or emery board. When I woke up in the morning, my teeth were sore and it was tender to eat throughout the day.
6. MEET YOUR NEW SMILE
I’m on month two right now and so far, super happy with the process. To be honest, I haven’t been wearing the aligners for the recommended 22 hours a day. I never realized how much eating and drinking I do throughout the day. I am a food blogger. I’ve been wearing the aligners more like 12 hours a day so hopefully, I’ll get the right results.
