I know your first question is, “Wait, what? What’s the Facebook Portal?” Facebook just launched new video calling devices, Facebook Portal and Portal Plus with Alexa, so you can video chat with friends and family with just a voice command of “Hey Portal”.

I’ve spent some time playing with both devices and here are the top 3 features of the Facebook Portal and you can save $100 when you buy both the Portal and Portal+ from Facebook!
1. CHAT WITH YOUR FRIENDS & FAMILY EASILY
Facebook Portal is a home video communication device that makes it easier to connect more regularly with the most important people in your life, and share the little everyday moments that relationships are built on. Connecting through Portal feels less like being on a video call and more like being together in the same room, even when you’re miles apart.
Portal pulls from your Facebook friends and you can easily video call a friend hands-free by just saying, “Hey Portal, call ___.” My parents live in South Texas and they’re always asking to see what Basil and Beethoven are up to so I gave them the Portal so we could all stay connected.
2. AUTO-FRAMING SMART CAMERA
Both the 10.1-inch Portal and the 15.6-inch Portal Plus have a 360-degree beamforming input and a 12-megapixel camera with a 140-degree field of view and up to 8x digital zoom. The coolest feature of the smart camera is the auto-framing – you can walk around the room and the camera will follow and focus on you. If you have a group of people in the room, you can also tap to focus on an individual person and the Portal will zoom in on that person. The Portal Plus screen rotates 90 degrees to switch from landscape to portrait orientation.
3. PRIVACY BY DESIGN
Portal comes with a convenient camera cover so you can cover up the camera when you’re not using it if you wish and Portal does not record or store any conversations as the video chats are live streamed. I have Portal sitting on my makeup counter and it plays photos from my photo album when it’s in idle. I like how I can play music on Spotify from Portal and with Alexa built in, I can tell Portal to add items to my shopping list or ask questions.
